RAPHAEL JASPERT, LIKE MOST GUITARISTS, BEGAN TO PLAY HIS SELF-COMPOSED MUSIC IN THE GUITAR TRIO-FORMATION. WITH THE START OF HIS MUSIC STUDIES AT THE HANOVER UNIVERSITY OF MUSIC, DRAMA AND MEDIA IN 2013, THE RHYTHM GROUP WAS QUICKLY FOUND: MARCUS LEWYN (DB) AND TIM NICKLAUS (DR). AFTER A FEW CONCERTS IT TURNED OUT THAT THE SOUND DIVERSITY OF THE GUITAR TRIO IS NOT ENOUGH FOR THE IDEAS OF THE COMPOSITIONS. BY THE SELECTION OF THE OTHER MUSICIANS, HOWEVER, THE CREATIVITY AND THE INDIVIDUAL SOUND OF THE AVAILABLE MUSICIANS WERE AT THE FOREFRONT, AND NOT THE INSTRUMENT THEY ACTUALLY USED. THUS THE TRIO EXPANDED TO THE QUARTET BY VOLKAN AYDOGDU (TENOR SAXOPHONE AND DOUBLINGS) AND LATER BY NILS BREDERLOW (HIGH SAXOPHONES) TO THE QUINTET: ASCH.

THE NAME OF THE QUINTET IS INSPIRED BY SALOMON ASCH, THE GESTALT PSYCHOLOGIST. HE WAS THE DOCTORAL ADVISER OF THE FAMOUS PSYCHOLOGIST STANLEY MILGRAM AND WAS CONCERNED WITH THE SUBJECT OF GROUP OPINIONS, INDIVIDUALS WITHIN THE GROUP AND THE ADAPTATION OF THEM UNDER SOCIAL PRESSURE. THIS THEME FITS VERY WELL TO MUCH OF THE MUSIC OF ASCH, WHICH IS ABOUT CONTINUOUS, MUTUALLY DEPENDENT, INSPIRED AND CORRELATED IMPROVISATION, IN A FRAME OF STRICTLY COMPOSED MUSIC WITH THE OPTION TO BREAK THROUGH.

THE RESULTING MUSIC CAN BE DESCRIBED AS MODERN JAZZ WITH INFLUENCES FROM ROCK AND FREELY IMPROVISED MUSIC. THE FIVE MUSICIANS FROM HANOVER EXPERIMENT WITH SOUNDS TO CREATE MOODS RANGING FROM SOULFUL TO BRUTAL.
